Dr. Paul Dimotakis is the JPL Chief Technologist and the John K. Northrop Professor of Aeronautics and Professor of Applied Physics at Caltech. His B.Sc. in Physics, M.Sc. in Nuclear Engineering, and Ph.D in Applied Physics were all from Caltech. He stayed on as a member of the Caltech faculty. His experimental, theoretical, and computational research has focused on superfluidity, turbulent-flow phenomena, combustion, hypersonic flow and propulsion, laser diagnostics, image detectors and high-speed image-data acquisition, adaptive optics, shock focusing, and others. |
| Biography |
| In space-related activities before joining JPL, he worked on the OGO-C spacecraft in the mid-60s, later on the Space Shuttle, and more recently on Mars Pathfinder, the Spitzer Space Telescope, and the Shuttle Columbia failure. He has consulted for aerospace companies, Disney, DOE's Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, and the successful America3 sail design for the 1992 Americas Cup. Prof. Dimotakis has received a Caltech teaching award, has served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Fluid Mechanics, and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and an Associate Fellow of the AIAA. He has served on National Academy of Science and other panels and continues to serve as a member of advisory groups to the U.S. government. |
